| Puni Puni Poemy
I did get some laugh at parts of this show. I suspect anyone with anything beyond a cursory appreciation of anime would enjoy part of this DVD. That being said, I not sure if it's worth sitting through the annoying parts to see the funny bits. In truth, this may well be the most annoying anime I've ever seen. The main character, Poemi Watanabe, is manic most of the time. The show spoofs various anime clichés, mostly magical girl amine, but there are pokes at Dragonball, GTO, Astro Boy, and many other Japanese animations, not to mention a straight on mockery of the sleaze in much of the genre. I'm sure I missed lots of the jokes. As a matter of fact I'm not sure if I understood half of what Poemi said; she talks so fast and in such a shrill tone that at times I felt like I was listening to a cattle auctioneer on helium. The DVD is broken up into two half hour episodes. You'll want to take a break between the episodes. As to the storyline, let me just say that it's absurd in a self-referential way. Poemi Watanabe wants to be a voice actor, her father is the director, the villain complains about the script writing. The production values are surprisingly high. I found it disconcerting to see ridiculous scenes lovingly drawn. The racey scenes, and there are lots of naughty things going on in this show, display a good sense of well crafted exaggerated female forms. Just because the show makes fun of sleaze doesn't mean this show isn't sleazy itself. All in good fun I suppose. Rent this DVD is you have seen a moderate amount of anime, or you'll miss too many of the jokes. Make sure you're not offended by cheesecake based scenes. Don't, I repeat don't rent this if you're easily annoyed, because this is a really annoying anime. It seems there is only two episodes, and that's it. If you want more, you're screwed, but I think two episodes is enough. |
